This Comic Exhibit Will Give You a New Appreciation for German Humor – Check It Out Saturday
Since 2005, the last cover page of the German edition of LE MONDE diplomatique has featured a comic strip. The German edition is the only one that publishes this comic page. Now, see a selection of comics from this very publication at Goethe Pop Up, during the White Bunnies, Arabic Cola, and The Last Passenger Pigeon exhibit.
Karoline Bofinger, a comic editor of LE MONDE diplomatique, selects a comic artist or cartoonist every month who designs this page and captures his or her personal view of international politics and current events. Over the years, renowned illustrators and comic-strip artists have created remarkable contributions - and often brilliantly mastered the particular challenge of the large page format as well as the limited narrative space.
The comics cast an unpredictable, often absurd and sometimes melancholy glance at politics, everyday life, and culture. The concept refers to the beginnings of modern comic strips, which emerged at the end of the 19th century as the icing on the cake of newspapers traditionally adorning the last page.
Visitors of the White Bunnies, Arabic Cola, and The Last Passenger Pigeon exhibition at the Goethe Pop Up Kansas City have the opportunity to see the works of stars of the German alternative comic scene, illustrators and picture book authors, young talents, and established artists. All their works walk the fine line between high culture and trivia that has become the trademark of postmodern visual art.
The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. Goethe promotes the study of German abroad and encourages international cultural exchange. In addition to the Pop-Up location in Kansas City, Goethe operates pop-ups in Houston, Minneapolis, and Seattle, in addition to traditional offices in San Francisco, Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington.
Don’t miss White Bunnies, Arabic Cola, and The Last Passenger Pigeon while it’s still open to the public! A curated selection of comic pages will be on display at the Goethe Pop Up Kansas City until August 31st. Admission is free.
Although we provide the utmost luxury at Jefferson on the Lake Apartments in Olathe, Kansas, we realize that you need to get out and socialize with those in your surrounding community. This event gives you the chance to do just that! Don’t hesitate to attend today!
