Hear Tunes from The Book of Longing During This Folly Jazz Series Concert

As the longest-running jazz series in Kansas City, Folly Jazz Series takes great pride and great care in the artists that they book to perform at The Folly Theatre’s historic venue. So, don’t miss the 37th Annual Folly Jazz Series! This season’s line up is rich with talented musicians, including the stylings of Luciana Souza. Check out her performance this Saturday, March 7th beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Grammy winner Luciana Souza is one of Jazz’s leading singers and interpreters. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, in the late sixties, she grew up in a family of Bossa Nova innovators – her father a singer and songwriter, and her mother a poet and lyricist. Luciana’s work as a performer transcends traditional boundaries around musical styles, offering solid roots in jazz, sophisticated lineage in world music, and an enlightened approach to new music.

Luciana has gone on to perform with great names such as Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, composer Osvaldo Golijov, and the New York Philharmonic. The Jazz Journalists Association has also awarded Best Female Jazz Singer to Souza in 2005 and 2013. Billboard magazine has said of Luciana: “she continues her captivating journey as a uniquely talented vocalist who organically crosses genre borders. Her music soulfully reflects, wistfully regrets, romantically woos, joyfully celebrates...”

Luciana Souza will perform The Book of Longing at the Folly Jazz Series. Stunning, provocative, impassioned, esoteric, beautiful and soulful, The Book Of Longing is a passionate melding of poetry by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, and Luciana herself - set to beautiful string accompaniment - for which all of the music was written and arranged by Souza. This album combs the depths of human emotion from start to finish.

Don’t miss Luciana Souza at the 37th Annual Folly Jazz Series this Saturday, March 7th! Tickets start at $20 and are available at www.follytheater.org. For additional information, please call (816) 474-4444.
